Tonight … See Earth's shadow and Belt of Venus
Look east after sunset for Earth's shadow. It's a deep blue-grey band, curved as Earth is curved, ascending after sunset. The pink band above the shadow is the Belt of Venus.

Best Perseid meteor shower in 96 years? Nah

Another erroneous and misleading meme is going around about an August 12, 2017 meteor shower. Will it light up the whole sky? Be the best in 96 years? Sorry. No.

Where's the moon? Waxing gibbous

It's waxing toward full moon and a partial lunar eclipse on August 7-8. This week's waxing moon means moonlight for the Perseid meteor shower on the peak mornings of August 12 and 13.

Stages of a total eclipse

The August 21 total solar eclipse will last several hours. Bookmark this handy checklist of must-see events and effects, from eclipse gurus Fred Espenak and Mark Littmann.

To restore soils, feed the microbes

Healthy soil teems with bacteria, fungi, viruses and other microorganisms that help store carbon and fend off plant diseases.

Tonight … Summer Triangle

The Summer Triangle is a fixture of our skies at this time of year. It's not a constellation. It's an asterism, or noticeable pattern of stars ... in this case, a very large one!

Ciudad Juárez, Mexico

We usually see photos from photographer Josh Blash from the Atlantic coast, up around New Hampshire. This photo of Juárez - in the Chihuahuan Desert - was a delightful surprise.
