Happy birthday, Nicolaus Copernicus

Why do we love him? Because he broke open the medieval idea of an enclosed, Earth-centered universe and set us on course for a new cosmology.

Copernicus’ revolution and Galileo’s vision: In pictures

It’s not a stretch to say these astronomers fundamentally changed the way we think about our place in the universe. We can gain insights into how this profound shift unfolded by looking at their actual notes.

Return of the young moon, and Venus

Two lovely and hopeful signs in the sky. Photos here from the EarthSky community.

Tonight and tomorrow … Moon and Uranus

The waxing crescent moon and the planet Uranus are in front of the constellation Pisces the Fishes.

Happy birthday, Nicolaus Copernicus

This image, by an unknown artist, is called Empedocles Breaks through the Crystal Spheres. It first appeared in a meteorology book by Camille Flammarion in 1888.

Return of the young moon, and Venus

David Scharf in Tampa, Florida caught the young moon and Venus on February 16. In your sky, Venus will appear faint against the twilight background because it's so near the sunset. Still, even when it's low in the sky and near the sun, Venus' brightness can surprise you!
