Giant sunspots, solar flares, aurora alert!

Sunwatchers are still tracking those 2 huge sunspot groups making their way across the Earth-facing side of the sun. Then yesterday there was a giant X-flare! Watch for possible auroras.
See an extra-red moon or sun this week?
If you live in the U.S. or Canada, a peculiarly red moon - or very spectacular sunrise or sunset - might be due to smoke from wildfires. Click in for images from Earth and space.
Asteroid spacecraft to slingshot past Earth

A NASA mission to return a sample from an asteroid will soon get a planned gravity assist from Earth. You can spot the spacecraft in the sky and submit images … or participate in NASA's Wave to OSIRIS-REX campaign.

Giant sunspots, solar flares, aurora alert!

Gowrishankar Lakshminarayanan called this: “… a surreal sunset from Fire Island Lighthouse in Fire Island, New York. You can see the 2 giant sunspots – AR2673 and AR2674 – as the sun is setting.” The sunspots are visible to the eye, but you must use a safe solar filter. Your eclipse glasses will work!

Talay Daniel Erol caught this image of bright Venus the east before dawn – in the midst of the pyramid-shaped, ghostly zodiacal light – from Adrasan Antalya, Turkey.
