Every year, at the Planetary Defense Conference, asteroid experts from around the globe run days-long simulations of asteroids headed for major cities. In 2019, it was New York City's turn. Read more. Meet Spica, a whirling double star Spica's 2 stars orbit a common center of gravity in only 4 days. Their mutual gravity distorts each star into an egg shape, with the pointed ends facing each other. Read more. Star Arcturus cuts through galaxy's disk Arcturus isn't moving solely within the flat disk of our Milky Way galaxy. It's cutting perpendicularly through the disk. Millions of years from now, it'll be lost from view, at least for those who are earthbound and looking with the eye alone. Read more.

Tonight … Look for the legendary green flash A sea horizon is best for seeing a green flash, but any distant, flat horizon will do. Look at the last moment before the sun sets. This green flash image was taken by Jim Grant, an EarthSky friend on Facebook. He captured it off the coast of Ocean Beach, California, and identified it as a mock mirage green flash.

Nature in Japan: Time travel Hideto Shimizu hiked many miles across the mountains of Japan to capture the images in this gorgeous 90-second video.
