Best Perseid meteor shower in 96 years? Nah

Another erroneous and misleading meme is going around about an August 12, 2017 meteor shower. Will it light up the whole sky? Be the best in 96 years? Sorry. No.

It's waxing toward full moon and a partial lunar eclipse on August 7-8. This week's waxing moon means moonlight for the Perseid meteor shower on the peak mornings of August 12 and 13.

Stages of a total eclipse

The August 21 total solar eclipse will last several hours. Bookmark this handy checklist of must-see events and effects, from eclipse gurus Fred Espenak and Mark Littmann.

Allow one week for shipping in the U.S. Sorry, we can no longer guarantee delivery of international orders. Order today! EarthSky is on the approved list of reputable vendors of eclipse glasses, from the American Astronomical Society.

To restore soils, feed the microbes

Healthy soil teems with bacteria, fungi, viruses and other microorganisms that help store carbon and fend off plant diseases.

Tonight … Summer Triangle

The Summer Triangle is a fixture of our skies at this time of year. It's not a constellation. It's an asterism, or noticeable pattern of stars ... in this case, a very large one!
