Watch what happens when scientists excavate a giant anthill

This video clip shows the excavation of a huge ant city, from a former colony of grass-cutter ants. Over the course of 3 days, scientists pumped 10 tons of cement into the abandoned ant hill. After weeks of digging, they revealed the colony's intricate and impressive structure. It's amazing.

Around now, watch for Taurid fireballs

View larger. | Skywatchers are still remembering the Taurid fireballs they saw in 2015 … like this one, caught by veteran meteor observer Eliot Herman in Tucson, Arizona. This one is bright enough to see in the moonlight. If you know your constellations, you can see it's coming straight from Taurus. Here's a 2019 Taurid meteor, also caught by Eliot. We haven't seen many Taurid photos this year. But you never know what you'll see, unless you watch … and now's the time. Here's how to watch this year's shower.
