If the Atlantic Ocean keeps getting wider, and the Pacific Ocean keeps closing, the Americas will eventually collide with northward-drifting Antarctica, and then with the already-collided Africa-Eurasia. The supercontinent that would then form has been named Novopangea by today's scientists. Read more.

The northeastern United States will sizzle this week as summer heat builds to near-record levels in some places. Many metropolitan areas will experience the hottest air temperatures of the summer so far. In the nation's capital, temperatures on Saturday are forecast to reach 110 F, just 2 degrees shy of the forecast for Death Valley, California, on the same day. Read more.
