Sahara Desert is expanding

Antarctic ice grounding lines are shifting
Another desert - cold, dry Antarctica - is losing parts of its floating icy margins, due to warm ocean water eating away at the ice.

Artist Mario Irarrázabal created this large sculpture after the city of Antofagasta, Chile asked him for something notable, to fill the empty space of the Atacama Desert. Astrophotographer Yuri Beletsky captured it at night.

Before dawn this weekend … Moon, Saturn, Mars

Watch for 3 worlds - the moon, Mars and Saturn - very late at night. Best views will be just before dawn Saturday and Sunday.

NOTE: To serve you better, we're moving to a new host server. There will be no EarthSky News on Friday as we complete this process. See ya Saturday!

Before dawn this weekend … Moon, Saturn, Mars

As seen from around the world, the moon will be near Saturn and Mars both Saturday and Sunday mornings. This is Saturday's view from North America, where all 3 worlds will fit (or nearly fit) into a single binocular field.
