Next few evenings … Moon and Venus

You'll see some gorgeous pairings of the moon and brightest planet Venus this week. Look west after the sun goes down.  

The Lyrid meteor shower has started

Watch for Lyrids this week. April 22 is the peak morning. Try April 21 and 23 as well. Good news ... the moon is out of the way.

Scientists seeking continuous gravitational waves

Scientists 1st observed gravitational waves from merging black holes. Now they're targeting a different gravitational wave signal: a long continuous waveform from a rapidly spinning neutron star.

Moon and Venus after sunset

Watch for gorgeous pairings of the moon and Venus this week. Look west shortly after the sun goes down. Also notice the star Aldebaran, in the constellation Taurus the Bull. From the right spot on Earth, the moon will cover Aldebaran. Click here for details on the occultation.

Window, zodiacal light, setting moon

A popular hike in Big Bend National Park in Texas will take you to what's called the Window. It's a grand place to watch the sun or moon set. Here's a night shot, complete with zodiacal light (the hazy light pyramid above the setting moon), by Gowrishankar Lakshminarayanan.
