Tonight … Full supermoon
Tonight's full moon is 2017's only full supermoon. The 2 full moons in January 2018 - on January 2 and 31 - will also count as supermoons.
December guide to the bright planets
Mars and Jupiter are up before sunup. Mercury joins them around the December solstice. Venus and Saturn will become lost in the sun's glare this month.
What would Earth be like without its moon?
Earth would be a very different world indeed. No eclipses. Smaller tides. But the biggest change would be in the length of Earth's day.
Happy birthday December babies!
Your month has two birthstones, turquoise and zircon.

Land of Terror
This looks like an abstract painting, but it's a satellite image of the the Tanezrouft Basin, a part of the Sahara Desert in central Algeria known as the Land of Terror.
