Wildlife Photographer of the Year 2017

This is one of the 13 finalist photos, by David Lloyd, taken at Kenya’s Maasai Mara National Reserve. This female elephant was probably the matriarch, and she looked straight at him. Her gaze was, he says, full of respect and intelligence – the essence of sentience.
