September guide to the bright planets

Jupiter and Saturn are evening planets. Venus, Mercury and Mars are morning planets. Watch for the close conjunction of Mercury and Mars around mid-September.

Watch for September's full moon

Full moon falls during the night of September 5 for the Americas, September 6 for much of the rest of the world. It's not a true Harvest Moon yet, but - for the Northern Hemisphere - it acts like one.

September's birthstone is the sapphire

Happy birthday September babies! Like the ruby, your birthstone, the sapphire, is a form of the mineral corundum, a normally drab grey mineral.

Pluto in moon's direction September 1

Will you see Pluto? No way. This tiny world some 2,000 times fainter than the faintest star visible to the unaided eye.
