Eclipse day checklist
This checklist - from eclipse master Fred Espenak - will help you plan the perfect total solar eclipse experience! Do your homework and the only other thing you’ll need is perfect weather on August 21!
Add your eclipse event to astronomers' map
The American Astronomical Society is the U.S. association of professional astronomers. The Society wants to help you publicize your event for the August 21, 2017 total solar eclipse.
Best Perseid meteor shower in 96 years? Nope
Another erroneous and misleading meme is going around about an August 12, 2017 meteor shower. Will it light up the whole sky? Be the best in 96 years? Sorry. No.
Tonight … Big Dipper to Polaris, Mizar, Alcor
Use the Big Dipper to find Polaris, the North Star. Then notice the 2 stars Mizar and Alcor in the Big Dipper’s handle.

Big Dipper to Polaris, Mizar, Alcor
The 2 outer stars in the bowl of the Big Dipper - Dubhe and Merak - always point to Polaris, which is part of the famous Little Dipper. Mizar and Alcor are a naked-eye double star, located second-to-last from the end of the Big Dipper's handle.

Wishing on a shooting star
Grant Miller captured this self-portrait during 2016's Perseid meteor shower. 2017's shower has interference from a bright moon, but you still might see a bright meteor!
