Today is the start of the 2018 Atlantic hurricane season. Experts are forecasting a 75% chance that the 2018 season will be near- or above-normal, thanks in part to a weak El Niño.

Help EarthSky keep going!

You continue to amaze us. Day Two of our yearly crowd-funding campaign was also just ... great. Thank you for your help in keeping EarthSky going.

2017's costliest hurricanes

Harvey, Irma and Maria - all 2017 hurricanes - were among the top 5 costliest Atlantic hurricanes since record-keeping began in 1851.

Are you prepared for a hurricane?

If a hurricane were approaching, would you and your family be ready? This post can help you prepare.

How hurricanes get their names

The World Meteorological Organization manages the formal system by which hurricanes receive their names. Find hurricane names for 2018 here.

Before dawn ...Moon, Saturn, Mars

2017's costliest hurricanes

Hurricane Harvey at peak intensity - August 25, 2017 - near the coast of Texas. Much of its damage came from flooding triggered by rainfall in the Houston metropolitan area. Harvey is tied with Hurricane Katrina as the costliest tropical cyclone on record.

Tonight ... Moon, Saturn, Mars before dawn June 1-3

Notice with your unaided eye that Saturn appears golden in color while Mars exhibits a reddish hue. Also, Mars is now the brighter planet, and it's soon to be much, much brighter. Mars will remain brighter than Saturn for the rest of 2018.
