Best photos: Snowflakes

A lot of us have been cold and "snow-verwhelmed" recently, but - although we might be getting tired of snow - we're never tired of snowflake pics from EarthSky friends!

Best photos: Morning planets

Last Sunday morning, Jupiter and Mars were half a moon-diameter apart. Now the moon is sweeping past. Plus Mercury and Saturn are in conjunction this weekend. Photos here.

Sun's entry into zodiac signs, 2018

Astrology and astronomy are different systems. In some systems of astrology, signs of the zodiac remain fixed relative to seasonal markers, such as the equinox and solstice points on the sky's dome.

Tonight … See the Unicorn

Within a triangle of 3 bright stars - hidden in between the many bright and glittering stars visible at this time of year - you'll find the constellation of Monoceros the Unicorn.

Stephanie Longo in Colorado wrote Thursday: "The sky was gorgeous, but it was bitter cold at 8,700 feet in Mueller State Park. My fingers were numb and I had trouble with my equipment, but I was glad to get one picture I like." Thank you, Stephanie!

Before daybreak … Mercury/Saturn conjunction soon!
Saturn and Mercury closest Saturday. Friday morning - and this weekend - the moon will be pointing toward them. Look low in the sunrise direction. Binoculars will help you scan near the horizon. Mercury is the brighter object.
